Forum Finanz: Ecological Tax I - A key to sustainability and competitiveness

The use of market-based instruments becomes increasingly important in climate and energy policy. In this respect the implementation of the EU Energy Tax Directive and the EU missions Trading Directive were the first major steps on the European level. In view of the post-Kyoto period, the European Council has already foreseen a review of the Energy Tax Directive at its meeting in spring 2008 in order to bring it more in line with the EU’s energy and climate objectives.

The new European Commission is expected to put an according proposal forward at the beginning of 2010. In general terms, market-based instruments play a key role in EU policies that aim at a sustainable, prosperous and competitive European Union. Hereby, Ecological Tax Reforms can make a considerable contribution, bringing benefits not only to the environment but also to the employment and the economy as a whole.

This event will look at the various effects of Ecological Tax Reforms in Europe and discuss the options for their successful implementation. In the first part, an overview of the results of studies conducted in Europe will be provided, whereby special attention will be devoted to their effects on competitiveness. In the second part, experiences from the implementation of Ecological Tax Reforms in Sweden will be presented.
