Forum Finanz: World Development Report 2010 - Development and Climate Change

According to WDR 2010, the world is already feeling the impacts of a changing climate: more droughts, floods, strong storms, and heat waves - thereby “taxing” individuals, firms, and governments, and drawing resources away from development. If climate change continues at current rates, it could lead to a different world from today’s.

Even the best efforts are unlikely to stabilize average temperatures at anything less than 2°C above preindustrial levels. This warming will require substantial adaptation efforts. Developed countries can and must reduce their high-carbon footprint. Developing countries will need to adapt, while mitigating the climate implications of their massive needs for energy, transport, urban systems, agricultural and industrial production - all producing more greenhouse gases if pursued using traditional means.

The WDR 2010 analyzes how to make development more resilient to climate change, so that countries can pursue growth and overcome poverty while stabilizing temperatures. Some of the key messages of WDR 2010 are:
