, Vienna Corona - Blümel: “Good talks with representatives of the banking sector and the OeNB”
Vienna (OTS) - Finance Minister Gernot Blümel has met with representatives of the financial sector to discuss current and possible future economic consequences of the coronavirus. In addition to representatives of the largest banks, the Finance Minister also met National Bank Governor Robert Holzmann.
“We are in a difficult situation and, as the Federal Government, are taking coordinated measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
This inevitably has an impact on daily life as well as on our country’s businesses. I am in constant contact with the banking industry, as well as with the Austrian National Bank (km/h) and the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA). The banking sector has done its homework in the past and is well prepared for these circumstances,” said Finance Minister Gernot Blümel, who is also in constant contact with his departmental colleagues in Europe and with the European Commission.
In addition to possible economic consequences and countermeasures, the talks focused on practical issues that are of great importance in the current situation. For example, Finance Minister Blümel asked bank representatives to pay the utmost attention to the functioning of IT systems and to postpone any maintenance work that is not absolutely necessary, so that Internet payments, credit transfers and suchlike can continue to function smoothly.
Another topic was the supply of cash. “The OeNB has sufficient cash reserves to supply ATM operators, banks and the economy with cash. For this reason, the OeNB’s opening hours were also extended in the cash area”, explained National Bank Governor Robert Holzmann.
