Finance Minister Gernot Blümel receives Eurogroup President Paschal Donohoe

Exchange on the subject of “Europe’s Comeback”

Vienna (OTS) – Within the framework of the well-established format “Finance in Dialogue”, a round-table discussion on “Europe’s Comeback” was held at the Ministry of Finance on 09 September 2020. In particular, issues such as the future of the Eurogroup, the role of the small Member States, and possible ways out of the crisis were addressed. “I am pleased that the first journey of Paschal Donohoe in his new function takes him to Vienna. This means that not only a representative of a smaller economy is at the head of this committee, but Ireland’s reform course is also exemplary for other countries,” said Finance Minister Gernot Blümel at the meeting.

The coronavirus crisis has thrown everyone off kilter – in Austria, in Europe, and all over the world. The economic and financial fallout in particular will continue to occupy us for a while. The Irish Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe has been the new head of the Eurogroup since the beginning of July. Upon invitation of Austria, his first official visit abroad in this capacity took him to Vienna. Following meetings with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the German-speaking finance ministers, his visit continues the list of international personalities for talks in Vienna.

“The crisis is a challenge for all countries in Europe, and we must jointly work for the business location. The measures differ between the individual countries, but the objective is always the same: It is about jobs, companies and prosperity in Austria and Europe. In order to help our companies, we need fast and unbureaucratic help and flexible application of existing rules. It is not acceptable that the European framework is extended for large countries and we are required to justify our support for Austrian companies and jobs,” Finance Minister Gernot Blümel summarised the meeting.
