Blümel outraged at comments by Commission representative Selmayr

Vienna (OTS) – Finance Minister Gernot Blümel has responded with outrage to comments made today by the EU Commission representative in Vienna, Martin Selmayr, in Austrian daily newspaper Die Presse: "The remarks made by Mr Selmayr display an astonishing arrogance towards the Viennese hotel industry and towards affected sectors and businesses. To denigrate a commitment to businesses whose very existence is in jeopardy as being mere election campaigning testifies to an inability to properly understand the situation in Vienna.

Under the pretext of maintaining competition, unrealistic decisions are being made by the office of Vice-President Vestager. However, for many companies, the question is less of competitive ability, but rather one of sheer survival and of jobs. I would recommend that Mr Selmayr and his colleagues visit Vienna to see for themselves, with their eyes open, and speak with the affected companies and their employees."

To reiterate the situation of Austrian companies to the Commission, Finance Minister Blümel today sent a letter to Vice-President Vestager, inviting her to a meeting next week with affected business operators, aimed at clarifying matters.
