Enhanced Security Measures for FinanzOnline from 1 October 2025
The protection of data used on FinanzOnline will be improved once again. From 1 October 2025, access to FinanzOnline will only be possible with two-factor authentication. Nothing will change for those who already use the ID Austria digital identity verification system to access official agencies. This affects 36 per cent of users who already use ID Austria to log in to FinanzOnline. If this option is not used, an alternative form of authentication is available, which consists of a one-time code in addition to the user name and self-selected password.
Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer: "FinanzOnline has been an international showcase model for years. At the same time, however, it will still be possible to contact the tax office offline and deal with tax matters using the relevant forms, so that no one is excluded. To ensure that we remain one of the most modern and secure financial administrations in the world in the future, we are now introducing mandatory two-factor authentication for FinanzOnline, as is already common practice in many areas, such as banking."
State Secretary for Finance Barbara Eibinger-Miedl: "From October, we will be increasing the security of FinanzOnline with mandatory two-factor authentication – as is already common practice in online banking. ID Austria is the easiest and fastest way to log in to FinanzOnline, but of course, other two-factor authentication apps can also be used. At the same time, it will of course still be possible to submit forms directly to the tax office, so we are ensuring that no one is left behind."
Two-factor authentication (2FA) is an additional layer of security that requires a second form of verification in addition to a password to gain access to an account. In addition to the login details, which are entered as usual, you must enter an additional confirmation code that is generated via a personal device, such as a smartphone.
ID Austria as the preferred solution
ID Austria is the option recommended by the Ministry of Finance for secure access to FinanzOnline. It meets all the requirements for modern two-factor authentication and does not require additional registration in FinanzOnline. At the same time, it can also be used far beyond the tax portal, for example for numerous other administrative services or in business. This not only makes everyday digital life more secure, but also much easier.
An alternative option is available for individuals and companies who cannot or do not want to use ID Austria. In February 2025, FinanzOnline introduced the option of integrating an authenticator app, such as Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator. Suitable solutions are also planned for desktop PCs and laptops. The setup is done directly in the login area of FinanzOnline, where step-by-step instructions support the process. If a device is lost or changed, a recovery code ensures that the login can be reactivated independently.
Early switchover recommended
To ensure a smooth transition from 1 October 2025, the BMF recommends that all users make the switch now. Citizens who already use ID Austria do not need to register for 2FA. They can simply and securely log in as usual with their ID Austria.
Long-term development of FinanzOnline
Since its introduction more than two decades ago, FinanzOnline has developed into the central platform for Austrian tax administration and has long been an international benchmark for user-friendliness and security. The Federal Ministry of Finance is consistently pursuing the goal of continuing this success story. The mandatory introduction of two-factor authentication marks another important milestone in ensuring the highest standards of data protection and service quality in the future.
