Secure access to FinanzOnline with two-factor authentication
What changes will there be to the FinanzOnline login?
To increase the security level of your access to FinanzOnline, you will now need to log in using two-factor authentication (2FA). 2FA is based on the principle of “knowledge” and “possession”. In addition to your login details, which you enter as usual (“knowledge”), you have to enter an additional confirmation code generated by a device you own, such as your smartphone (“possession”).
How do I get my second factor?
The easiest way is with ID Austria. Once you have it, you can use ID Austria to log in to FinanzOnline.
You don't have ID Austria yet? Simply obtain your ID Austria now from one of the many registration authorities (e.g., municipal offices, passport offices, district magistrates' offices or district authorities, state police headquarters) or make an appointment with your tax office.
You can find all the information you need about ID Austria here.
If you cannot use ID Austria, just set up the FinanzOnline 2FA on a device (e.g., smartphone, tablet).
How can I set up the 2FA without ID Austria?
Log in to FinanzOnline using your usual login details and have your smartphone or tablet ready with an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Passwords (Apple only) or WinAuth (Windows only).
You can also use any other authenticator app that supports the "TOTP standard" (Time-based One-Time Password). Please note that while some paid authenticator apps are available in stores, their use is not necessary. After logging in, you will have the option to set up 2FA. The setup wizard will guide you through the process. Instructions for setting up common 2FA can be found here: Application Guide for registering 2-factor authentication (PDF, 676 KB)
Restoring 2FA
If you no longer have access to the device registered for 2FA, there are two options available, depending on whether you still have the recovery code.
Recovery code available
When you originally have registered for 2FA, you have downloaded a PDF file containing your personal recovery code.
Log in to FinanzOnline as usual and click on “I don't have access to my registered device”. Enter the recovery code there. 2FA will be reset and you can register a new device.
Recovery code lost
Go to the FinanzOnline login page. Select “Forgot password or locked out” depending on your login method. Enter your social security number, official photo ID and your username or participant ID. After the reset, you will receive an initial password. You can then log in and set up 2FA again.

Your social security number
An official photo ID (e.g., passport)
And, depending on the login field you selected, either your username or your participant and user ID

2FA is an additional layer of security that requires a second form of verification in addition to a password to access an account. 2FA is based on the principle of “knowledge” and “possession”: in addition to your login details, which you enter as usual ("knowledge"), you must enter an additional confirmation code generated by a device you own, such as your smartphone (“possession”).
No, you don't need internet access to generate the code in the Authenticator app.
The European Union's NIS2 Directive requires enhanced security measures for digital services. Affected organizations must implement appropriate risk management measures to ensure the security of their network and information systems. 2FA serves to increase the security of personal and financial data and prevent unauthorized access.
In an initial phase until September 2025, registration will be voluntary. However, for security reasons, we recommend registering as soon as possible. From October 2025, 2FA will be mandatory.
If you use ID Austria, no registration is necessary. You can log in easily and securely as usual with your ID Austria.
